Eucharistic Devotions

I developed these Devotions while serving as pastor in St. Gabriel's Parish in Burlington, Ontario. I recorded this year, 1995 / 1996. The purpose for these devotions was to give people an instrument of prayer for the Grace of Renewal in a traditional devotional setting. The beautiful music setting by Paul Curtin,

ENTERING INTO THE LORD’S PRESENCE

Opening Hymn

( As the priest approaches the altar, please kneel )

Prayer of Presence and Adoration

Jesus, my Lord and my God / I adore you present on our altar. / I bow down before you, my Savior and my God. ( pause to bow ) / Because of your great love and infinite mercy, / you have given us this wonderful sacrament / by which you are always with us. / Here I behold the fulfillment of your promise, / “I am with you always, even to the end of time.” / I knell before you in all my unworthiness. / I am disfigured by my sins. / Cover me with the mantle of your Divine Mercy. / Cleans me in the waters of forgiveness, flowing from your pierced heart. / It is not I who have sought you, you have sought me. / I was content to remain in the darkness of my unbelief. / I let myself be drawn in by the world, / by its persuasive arguments and its clever deceits. / Because of this, my faith has grown weak and uncertain. / I no longer love you as I once did. / I no longer trust you with my life. / My peace is gone, doubt and worry have invaded my soul. / Like Peter, sinking under the waves, / I cry out to you, “Lord save me! / Come O Lord with your healing Mercy. / En kindle in my heart the fire of your love. / Send forth your Spirit to renew and strength my sagging heart. / Let me know again the consolation of your presence, / Let me acclaim with joy and certainty to all the world, / “Jesus is Lord! He is here with us now! / Reach out and touch Him and be healed!”

PRAYER TO MARY MOTHER OF MERCY

Mother Mary, at the wedding feast of Cana, / when the wine for the feast ran out, / and the hosts were unable to provide for their guests, / you went on their behalf to intercede with your Son Jesus. / We praise God that you are here with us this night. / We also are in need. / We have run out of the wine of faith and courage / that once filled our lives with hope and strength. / We come to you Mary Mother of Mercy. / We pray that you will once again intercede on our behalf. / Jesus alone can restore in us the Grace that we have lost. / Teach us how to listen to your Son, / how to do whatever He commands us. / Show us how to fill up our empty vessels with the water of obedience. / Help us to experience, at the command of your Son, / His transforming power, / changing us into a Spirit filled people. / What love you have in your Immaculate Heart. \ What wisdom is found in your counsel. / Mother of Mercy, pray for us. (John Chp. 2)

PRAYER FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Lord Jesus, what love filled your heart / when the young man approached, asking the way to eternal life. / What sadness you felt when he turn away, / unable to accept your invitation to come and follow you. / Jesus, you alone are the truth. / You alone are the way that leads to the fullness of life. / Yet few are they who seek and find you. / Strong are the forces pulling at the hearts of our young people. / Shrewd and clever is the persuasion that lures them away from you. / Champion of the young, / how deep is the desire of your heart / that they should come to know you. / What blessing they will experience / when you fill them with the Holy Spirit. / You will enlighten their minds with your Truth. / You will inflame their hearts with love for God. / You will heal their wounds and restore the innocence of their youth. / With you in them and they in you / their lives will be transformed. / They will become instruments of peace and  signs of hope for this troubled world of ours. (Mark 10:17)

PRAYER FOR THE RENEWAL OF FAITH

With St. Thomas I now cry out, “my Lord and my God!” / Yet like St. Thomas I have doubted you and questioned my faith in you. / I too have been scandalized by the world, troubled by my problems, / confused by my sufferings or those of others. / I was tested and found wanting. / Even though I vowed as did St. Peter, / “Lord, I will never deny you”, / Satan has sifted me like sand through his fingers and I fell away. / In my thoughts and in my words I said, “I do not know the man.” / In my actions I denied my faith before everyone. / While I was denying you, you were suffering and dying for my sins. / You broke Satan’s hold over me by your passion and cross; / you won forgiveness for my sins. / What mercy you have shown by entering into my death and bring me back to life again. / Now heal me as you healed St. Peter on the shores of Tiberias Sea. / Ask me now, as you asked St. Peter, “do you love me?” / Yes Lord. You know everything, you know that I love you.

PRAYER FOR THE RESTORATION OF FAITH FOR OTHERS

Lord Jesus, your words to St. Peter, / “When you have recovered your faith Peter, strengthen your brothers.” / I pray now for my brothers and sisters struggling in their faith. / I pray especially for those I now mention: [ here pause and mention in your heart those for whom you are praying] O lord, you have told us that you desire Mercy- / that you have come to call the wounded and the broken, for they are the ones who need the Divine Physician. / Reach out your hand of Mercy and touch their hearts. / Drive from them Satan with all his evil intentions and deliver them from the power of his deceits. / Touch their ears, now deft to your gospel, with your healing power, / that they may hear you calling them by name, “Lazarus, come to life again.,”/ Create in them a hunger so strong, a hunger you alone can satisfy, / Say to them again, “Come and follow me.”

PRAYER FOR THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Jesus my Lord, I confess to you and to all the world / my need for your presence in my life. / I am alone and in darkness without you. / I am influenced and controlled by the many forces that surround me. / Even though I struggle against them,/ it is sin that so easily dominates my life. / Who can save me but you alone, / my Lord and my God. / Deliver me from the Evil One. / Touch my life with that power which flows from your resurrection. / Cause your Holy Spirit to be born in me anew. / Prince of Peace and Lord of Glory / reign now in my heart. / Baptize me with your Holy Spirit and Fire. / Raise me up to a New Life in you.

PRAYING WITH MARY ON THE WAY OF THE CROSS

Blessed Mary Mother of Jesus, / though the disciples abandoned your Son in His Hour, / you walked with Him each and every step on the Way of the Cross. / As you entered with Jesus this Passion, the swords of sorrow foretold by the prophet pierced your heart. / Great was the agony you endured as you saw your beloved Jesus suffer such a cruel and violent death. / Yet you saw my soul and the souls of countless others liberated from Hell / by the merits of Jesus’ perfect act of love. / Because of the Father’s love’ which burned in your Immaculate Heart, / you too willed that Jesus should carry my cross so that I might be saved, / so great was your love for me and for every soul.
As we begin these devotions, let me walk with you as you walk with Jesus, this Way of the Cross. / Teach me to understand that without  Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, I am still in my sins. / Let my prayer of sorrow for my sins and the sins of others  be a consolation for you. / Let the courage of faith that sustained you in this Hour of darkness, be given now to me. / May I know in my heart that power of love which conquered so fierce an enemy, / that brought to an end the reign of sin and death, / that won for the world salvation.

PRAYING WITH MARY ON PENTECOST

Holy Mary Mother of God, on Pentecost Day / you gathered all the friends of Jesus / in that meeting room of prayer. / Jesus had instructed that all must come together in prayer, / to wait in trusting hope for the Promised One to come. / In the mystery of God’s grace, / let us gather with you now. / We desire with all our hearts, / that the Anointing of Pentecost may come upon us once again. / Pray for us dear Mary, that the Mighty Wind of God’s Breath / will come and fill our house of prayer. / Pray that Jesus your Son / will send down upon us now, those tongues of flame, / to enkindle in our hearts  the fire of love and the light of faith . / Pray that our tongues be freed so that we might fill this house with the praises of God. / Pray O Queen of heaven, that the Holy Spirit will give to our hearts a song of joy and thanksgiving / for His mighty works now done in our midst. Come Holy Spirit, come. / Come down upon us now. / Melt our frozen hearts, reshape our distorted minds, /  renew our sagging spirits with your Breath of Life.

PROCESSION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

The procession begins with the Blessed Sacrament being reverenced and incensed. Then the priest will bring the Blessed Sacrament from the altar in procession down through the church, so that all may draw near to the One who’s touch saves them. As this happens we will sing together the following hymn.

SONG of MERCY

Holy God, Holy Mighty One,
Holy Immortal One,
Have mercy on us
And on the whole world. ( Repeat)

O Blood and Water
Which gushed forth from the Heart
of Jesus As a fount of Mercy for us,
I trust in you. ( Repeat )

Jesus, I trust in You. ( Echo)

Jesus, I trust in You. ( Echo)

(Repeat)

(Words from the diary of Sister Faustina.
Music by Jim Cowan)

As the Blessed Sacrament is carried through the church, consider yourself as the beggar along the roadside, calling out as Jesus approaches, “Jesus, Son of God have mercy on me.” Consider yourself as the women in the crowd who says to herself, “If I can reach out and touch even the hem of His robe I will be healed.” The LORD is about to pass by. He who knows you and loves you unconditionally is coming to bless you.

  BENEDICTION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

O Saving Victim

O saving Victim, open wide
The gate of heaven to man below!
Our foes press on from every side;
Your aid supply, Your strength bestow.

To Your great Name be endless praise,
Immortal God-head, One in Three!
O grant us endless length of days
In our true native land with Thee.

Down in Adoration

Down in adoration falling
Lo! the Sacred Host we hail;
Lo! our ancient forms departing,
Newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith for all defects supplying,
Where the feeble senses fail.

To the everlasting Father,
And the Son who reigns on high,
With the Holy Ghost proceeding
Forth from each eternally,
Be salvation, honour, blessing
Might and endless majesty.
Amen.

V. You have given them bread from heaven
R. Having all sweetness within it.

Let us pray.

O God, who in this wonderful sacrament have left us a memorial of Your Passion: grant us we beseech You, so to venerate the sacred mysteries of Your Body and Your blood, that we may ever feel within us the fruit of Your redemption, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.
R. Amen.

All: Let us forever adore the Most Holy Sacrament.
