The Mother of God (often referred to as "Theotokos"), in the Council of Ephesus, was a title given to Mary, of course, only after St. Matthew did so on the 1st page of the New Testament in his Gospel. Often this title is misunderstood as somehow intimating that Mary is somehow greater or co-eternal with God. This is not what is being affirmed in this title, however. In fact, this title exists to secure the identity of Jesus as God and to illuminate a truth about his identity.
